Character Background and Description
Isla is a French Canadian young adult. Her family has been a part of the island for generations, but the adventurous streak that runs in her blood means they often leave the island to follow different paths. Something always draws them back though, so Isla's relatives are spread throughout Cape Breton. She completed her undergraduate degree in linguistics at a university in Quebec, and started her graduate degree but has taken a year off. In Quebec, she worked as a translator (she speaks English, French, Gaelic, Russian, and Italian), but on the island she is a bartender at the Hedge Witch, a job she is overqualified for but taken on for the free rock shows she can watch while working at the small bar.

Isla is a young white woman with a strong nose and jaw, and unruly brown hair. She doesn't follow many of the grunge trends and instead prefers to dress more simply with a classic taste and French inspiration. She dresses in mainly dark colors and blacks and greys, primarily sweaters and pants under a grey duster coat she stole from her mother's closet. When she's hiking, she wears well-loved and broken-in hiking boots and a waterproof dark green jacket.

She is an avid hiker, and explores Eile Forest during her free time. With the sociability of her bartender and translator jobs, she loves the quiet of the woods. Isla grew up hearing stories of dangers that can lurk within, but she was always skeptical and normally disregards the warning. Foresight abilities run in her family, so Isla relies on that to keep her from danger. Her visions aren't elaborate by any means, and they're useless for aiding her studies, but they keep her from getting into trouble.

On one of her hikes, Isla had a vision of a crow lying dead amongst leaves which lead her to saving Crow, a shapeshifting fae, from being crushed by a fallen tree. They developed a close relationship, and Isla received Ó Braonáin, Crow's true name, out of gratitude and debt. Isla was taught at a young age the power one has over the fae by using their true name, so out of respect for the gift and her autonomy, Isla calls her Ona. The two developed a very close friendship, and Isla developed feelings for the strange fae. While bold in most aspects of her personality, she is not very forward romantically. She is gay, and doesn’t have a ton of experience because through college she was so busy with her studies to want a relationship. She's trying to find a way to approach her feelings in a way that'll make sense to this fae who is so wild and naive of human ways. Isla is trying to draw Crow out of her shell by bringing her into human areas more. She brings her to live shows and around town, and Crow is very curious, having been reclusive within the forest for as long as she can remember.

Isla's other friends are part of the alternative young crowd of the island. She hangs out with the bands who play at the bar and the other young adults that frequent it. She smokes cigarettes but is half-heartedly trying to quit. She feels the older generation on the island are a bit stuffy and stuck in their ways of tradition and opinions towards the fae.
